How We Got Here From Project Maven

In 2018, thousands of Google employees signed a petition protesting Project Maven — a DoD contract to apply AI to drone footage analysis. Google cancelled the contract and pledged not to build AI for weapons systems. It was one of the highest-profile moments of employee activism in tech history.

Eight years later, the same company is providing classified AI models to the same department. The pivot happened gradually — first cloud infrastructure contracts that didn’t technically violate the weapons pledge, then intelligence community work, then increasingly integrated defense applications. Each step was defensible in isolation. The cumulative shift is stark.

Why the Classified Part Matters

“Classified” means these deployments are operating outside public scrutiny. There’s no transparency about what the models are being used for, what safeguards are in place, or what decisions they’re informing.
