Google Is Quietly Supplying the Pentagon With Classified AI Models

Google is quietly arming the Pentagon with classified AI models. Not through a contractor. Not at arm’s length. Google — the company that famously cancelled Project Maven after employee protests in 2018 — is now providing classified AI capabilities directly to the US Department of Defense.

How We Got Here From Project Maven

In 2018, thousands of Google employees signed a petition protesting Project Maven — a DoD contract to apply AI to drone footage analysis. Google cancelled the contract and pledged not to build AI for weapons systems. It was one of the highest-profile moments of employee activism in tech history.

Eight years later, the same company is providing classified AI models to the same department. The pivot happened gradually — first cloud infrastructure contracts that didn’t technically violate the weapons pledge, then intelligence community work, then increasingly integrated defense applications. Each step was defensible in isolation. The cumulative shift is stark.

Why the Classified Part Matters

“Classified” means these deployments are operating outside public scrutiny. There’s no transparency about what the models are being used for, what safeguards are in place, or what decisions they’re informing. The AI ethics frameworks that Google publishes, the responsible AI principles, the safety commitments — none of them apply to work that’s classified.

This isn’t unique to Google. Microsoft, Amazon, and Palantir all have significant classified AI contracts. But Google’s specific history with Project Maven makes the distance traveled unusually visible.

The Buccaneer Take

Every major AI company will eventually face the same choice Google faced in 2018 and is now answering differently. Defense contracts are enormous, strategically important, and increasingly the frontier of AI deployment. The question isn’t whether AI will be used in military and intelligence contexts — it already is everywhere. The question is whether any of the public ethics commitments these companies make have any meaning when the contracts get large enough. 🏴‍☠️
