AI Is Now Doing Oncology Research and Surgical Training. Healthcare AI Just Got Real.
Two healthcare AI developments in June 2026 deserve more attention than they’re getting. Together they mark a turning point: AI in healthcare moving from decision support to autonomous action.
Tempus AI Goes Agentic in Oncology
Tempus, the Chicago-based clinical AI company, upgraded its Lens platform to use agentic AI for oncology drug development. The shift is meaningful: previous versions could retrieve and surface relevant data. The upgraded platform can run autonomous, multi-step research workflows — identifying targets, designing experiments, analyzing results, generating hypotheses, iterating.
Drug development is one of the most expensive, time-consuming, and failure-prone processes in existence. A typical drug takes 10-15 years and over a billion dollars to bring to market, with most candidates failing at some stage of clinical trials. Agentic AI that can compress the early research phase — running experiments and analyses autonomously rather than waiting for human researchers to execute each step — could fundamentally change those timelines.
NVIDIA Powers Surgical Training Simulations
NVIDIA is deploying its Cosmos physical AI platform for surgical training simulations — AI that can model the physical reality of surgical procedures with enough fidelity to train surgeons. This is a significant technical challenge: surgery involves precise physical manipulation, tactile feedback, and real-time response to unexpected findings. Building simulations that are accurate enough to actually transfer skills to real-world procedures requires the kind of physical world modeling that Cosmos was designed for.
The implication: surgical training that currently requires expensive equipment, cadavers, or supervised procedure time could increasingly happen in simulation. That expands access to surgical training globally and compresses the time required to develop competency.
The Buccaneer Take
Healthcare AI has been five years away for a decade. June 2026 is the month the timeline stopped being a joke. Agentic oncology research and AI surgical training are not pilots or experiments — they’re production deployments changing how medicine gets developed and practiced. The pace is going to accelerate from here. 🏴☠️
